What accessibility standards do we follow?
We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA as our target standard. This international benchmark is recognised as the minimum level of accessibility for public-sector and news websites, covering requirements for perceivable, operable, understandable and robust content.
Our technical team conducts regular audits using automated tools and manual testing by a dedicated reviewer. We also involve users with disabilities in periodic user-testing sessions to identify real-world barriers. Where possible we go beyond Level AA to improve the experience, for example by providing captions on video content and ensuring a logical focus order throughout the site.
How this works in practice
Every article published on Wochenanalyse undergoes an accessibility check before it goes live. Take our recent analysis of the Swedish budget proposal: the writer used structured headings (h2, h3) for each section, added alt text to the inflation chart that described both the trend and the key figures, and ensured the table of tax thresholds could be read by screen readers. Our editor tested the page using keyboard-only navigation and confirmed that the “Read more” links were distinguishable from surrounding text. When an automated colour contrast check identified one paragraph with a 4.3:1 ratio (below our target of 4.5:1), we adjusted the background shade to meet the level. That kind of routine review is applied to every piece of editorial content, including sponsored material, which is clearly labelled.
What are known limitations?
While we work continuously to improve, some areas of the site may not yet meet every WCAG success criterion. Older articles published before our current editorial process was fully in place may contain PDF attachments that are not entirely accessible, and third-party embeds such as interactive maps or social media widgets sometimes have limited keyboard support. We have documented these limitations in our internal backlog and are prioritising fixes. If you encounter a specific barrier, please let us know – we will address it and update this statement.
Who is responsible and how can you report issues?
